The short answer
For an Australia visa check, use ImmiAccount while the application is pending and VEVO once a visa is granted. ImmiAccount shows statuses such as Received, Initial assessment, Further assessment and Finalised. VEVO, the free Home Affairs service, shows a granted visa's dates and conditions from your passport details and a reference number.

Key takeaways
- A pending application is tracked in ImmiAccount; VEVO only shows visas that have already been granted.
- Further assessment is a normal stage, and Home Affairs contacts you through ImmiAccount if it needs more documents.
- Finalised means a decision has been made, granted or refused, so read the letter in your messages.
- VEVO needs your passport details and a reference number such as the transaction reference number or visa grant number; a passport number alone is not enough.
- VEVO is free, so any site charging to check an Australian visa, or asking for a passport scan, is not Home Affairs.
An Australia visa check means one of two things, and the official tool is different for each. While your application is waiting, you watch its status in ImmiAccount. Once a visa is granted, you check its dates and conditions in VEVO, the Visa Entitlement Verification Online service. This guide explains every ImmiAccount status, walks through a VEVO check step by step, and shows how to spot the unofficial check sites that ask for money.
How do you check an Australian visa online?
If you have applied and are waiting, sign in to ImmiAccount and look at the status next to your application in the list. If your visa has been granted, use VEVO to see what it allows. Both are run by the Department of Home Affairs and both are free.
The split matters. Home Affairs says VEVO can only show current visa information about visa holders. An application that is still being assessed does not appear there, so an empty VEVO result while you wait is normal and says nothing about your decision.
What does each ImmiAccount status mean?
ImmiAccount shows one status for each application. The meanings below come from Home Affairs' own ImmiAccount help on the applications list, with what to do at each stage.
| Status | What Home Affairs means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete | The form is not finished and cannot be submitted | Finish the form before you can pay |
| Awaiting documents | Supporting papers must be attached before submitting | Attach the listed documents |
| Ready to submit | The form is complete and can be submitted | Check every answer, then pay and submit |
| Awaiting payment | Waiting for a BPay payment, due within 7 days of submitting | Pay within the 7 days |
| Submitted | The application has reached the Department | Keep your transaction reference number |
| Received | The Department has it and will assess it | Wait; watch your messages |
| Initial assessment | It has gone through the first checks | Read any message asking for more information |
| Further assessment | It is being assessed; you will be contacted if more papers are needed | Answer any request by its deadline |
| Approved | Used for citizenship applications that are approved | Not a visitor visa status |
| Finalised | A decision has been made | Open your messages to see if it was granted or refused |
When you expand an application, ImmiAccount also shows the transaction reference number, the date it was submitted, the date it was last updated, a processing estimate where one is available and any actions still outstanding. Outstanding actions are the part to read first.
Which letters can arrive while you wait?
Statuses change slowly; messages carry the real news. Open each application's messages in ImmiAccount and check the email address you gave. A visitor applicant from Bangladesh is most likely to see these.
- Acknowledgement: confirmation that the application was received, with your transaction reference number.
- Request for more information: an officer wants a specific paper or answer by a set date.
- Biometrics request: give fingerprints and a facial photo at the place and by the date the letter states.
- Health examination request: book the exams the letter lists with an approved clinic.
- Invitation to comment: the officer has information that may count against you and is giving you a chance to respond. Answer fully and truthfully.
- Grant notice: the visa is granted, with your visa grant number, entry date and conditions.
- Refusal letter: the decision, the reasons and whether you have any review rights.
How do you check your visa in VEVO?
- 1
Open VEVO for visa holders
Go to the VEVO pages on the Home Affairs website and choose the option for visa holders. You can sign in through ImmiAccount or enter your details directly.
- 2
Choose your document
Select passport as the document type and enter the passport number and country exactly as on the passport you applied with.
- 3
Enter a reference number
Use your transaction reference number from ImmiAccount, the visa grant number from your grant notice, or a visa evidence number if you have one.
- 4
Add your date of birth and agree to the terms
VEVO matches all the details together, so one wrong digit returns no result.
- 5
Read the result
Check the visa subclass, grant date, the date you must enter by, how long you can stay and every condition number.
- 6
Save or send the result
VEVO can email the details to you or to someone who needs proof of your visa, such as an airline or a host.
If you have lost your reference number, the transaction reference number is in ImmiAccount against the application. Home Affairs also runs a VEVO request for reference number form for people who no longer have one.
What does a VEVO result show?
- Visa type and subclass, for a visitor usually 600 and the stream.
- Grant date and visa grant number.
- Must not arrive after: the last date you can enter Australia on this visa.
- Entries and length of stay: single or multiple entries and how long each stay can be.
- Conditions: numbered conditions such as 8101 (no work), 8201 (study limited to three months) or 8503 (no further stay), each with its meaning.
Airlines and Australian border officers see the same record, because Australian visas have no passport label. If the VEVO result does not match your plans, for example the stay is shorter than you expected, plan around the grant rather than the application. Our guide to the Australia visitor visa 600 from Bangladesh explains how the length of stay and conditions are set.
When an agency lodges for you, you should still see where your file stands without chasing anyone. Agencies that use Visolv give each client a portal under the agency's own brand, opened from the agency's link or a one-time code on the phone, showing the papers still needed, messages from the caseworker, the appointment and the decision. The agency's own dashboard shows which stage each file is at and who it is waiting on.
Why do some Australia visa check sites ask for money?
Because they are not Home Affairs. VEVO and ImmiAccount are free, and no official page lets anyone look up an Australian visa from a passport number alone. Sites and social media pages that charge for an "Australia visa check by passport number", or ask you to upload a passport scan, either repeat what VEVO shows for free or collect your identity for misuse.
- Official addresses belong to homeaffairs.gov.au and immi.gov.au; check the address bar before typing anything.
- Home Affairs never asks you to pay a fee to release a visa that has already been granted.
- Verify any grant notice an agent gives you in VEVO yourself, with your passport and the grant number. A grant VEVO cannot find is not a visa.
- Do not share your ImmiAccount password; give an agency its own access instead.
What should you do when the status changes?
Most changes need nothing from you. A move from Received to Initial assessment or Further assessment is normal progress, and an application can sit at one stage for weeks. Act when a message arrives: a request for information, a biometrics letter or a health examination request each carries a deadline, and missing it can end the application.
When the status shows Finalised, open the letter. A grant means check VEVO and read your conditions; a refusal means read each reason and whether any review is available before deciding on a new application. The same logic applies to other countries' trackers, explained in our guides to the US visa status check on CEAC and the Canada visit visa from Bangladesh.
Watch ImmiAccount while you wait, check VEVO once you hold a visa and never pay a third party to look. If you want a caseworker to follow the file with you, use a visa agency that works with Visolv and see how it works.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check my Australian visa with my passport number only?
No. VEVO needs your passport number and country, your date of birth and a reference number, such as the transaction reference number from ImmiAccount, the visa grant number on your grant notice or a visa evidence number. A passport number alone is not enough. Sites claiming to check an Australian visa from a passport number only are not run by Home Affairs.
What does Further assessment mean in ImmiAccount?
Home Affairs says Further assessment means the application is currently being assessed and that the Department will contact you if more supporting documents are needed. It is a normal stage, not a warning sign, and many applications sit there for some time. Keep checking your ImmiAccount messages and email, and answer any request for information before its deadline.
Does Finalised mean my Australian visa is granted?
Not necessarily. Finalised means a decision has been made, which can be a grant or a refusal. Open the application's messages in ImmiAccount or your email for the letter. A grant notice lists your visa grant number, the date you must enter by and your conditions, and you can confirm the grant in VEVO. A refusal letter gives the reasons and any review rights.
Is VEVO free to use?
Yes. VEVO, the Visa Entitlement Verification Online service, is free on the Department of Home Affairs website for visa holders, and registered organisations such as employers can also use it with your permission. Nobody needs to pay to check an Australian visa. Treat any website or agent charging a fee for a VEVO check, or asking for a passport scan, as unofficial.
How do I find my Transaction Reference Number?
Your transaction reference number appears in ImmiAccount against the application once it has been submitted; expand the application in your list to see it. It is also in the acknowledgement email Home Affairs sends after you lodge. Keep it safe, because you need it to check status, attach documents and, with your passport details, to use VEVO after a grant.
Can VEVO show an application that is still pending?
No. Home Affairs says VEVO can only show current visa information about visa holders, so an application still being assessed does not appear. Use ImmiAccount to follow a pending application through statuses such as Received, Initial assessment and Further assessment. Once the status is Finalised and a visa is granted, VEVO will show its dates and conditions.
