An Italy Schengen visa from Bangladesh follows the common EU rules with an Italian accent: one outsourced network of visa centres, a detailed embassy checklist and strict rules on apostilles. This guide covers who should apply to Italy, where to lodge, what the checklist asks for line by line, what it costs, how often Italy refuses, and what to do if it does.
Should you apply to Italy?
Apply to Italy only if Italy is your main destination, meaning the Schengen country where you will spend the most nights, or the first one you enter if two stays are equal. Six nights in Rome and three in Paris make an Italian file; the reverse is French, covered in our France visa from Bangladesh guide. Our Schengen visa from Bangladesh guide explains the rule in full.
The Italian embassy in Dhaka also processes type C Schengen applications for Malta and Slovakia, according to its page on where to apply. If either is your main destination, the same centres handle the file, but confirm the checklist with the embassy before booking.
Where do you apply for an Italy visa in Bangladesh?
You apply only through VFS Global, which the embassy names as the exclusive channel for visa applications. There are three centres, which accept visa applications Sunday to Thursday from 9:00 to 12:00 and return passports from 4 pm. Book on the VFS Italy Bangladesh site.
| City | Address |
|---|---|
| Dhaka | Nafi Tower, 4th and 5th floors, 53 South Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan 1, Dhaka 1212 |
| Chattogram | World Trade Center Chittagong, 5th floor, 102/103 Agrabad C/A, Commerce College Road, Chittagong 4100 |
| Sylhet | 4th floor, Nirvana Inn Complex, Ramer Dighir Par, Mirzajungle Road, Sylhet 3100 |
The centre collects the file, takes fingerprints and returns the passport; the embassy alone decides. Questions for the embassy go to the visa email address on its site, and it warns that visa emails sent to its other offices may be discarded.
What documents does the Italian checklist ask for?
The embassy's tourism checklist, updated in line with the European Commission's decision on supporting documents for Bangladesh, lists twelve groups of papers. The core is the same as any Schengen file; the detail is Italian.
- Form: the type C application form, filled in English or Italian and signed; for a minor, signed by both parents or the legal guardian.
- Photo: one recent ICAO-format colour photo, 3.5x4.0 cm, on a white background, taken within six months.
- Passport: valid at least three months beyond the visa's expiry, with two blank visa pages, plus a copy of the bio-data page.
- Family visit: an invitation in the format on the embassy's site, proof of the relationship, the host's ID and, for a foreign host, their residence permit.
- Employed: an original letter on company paper, stamped, signed and dated, with the company's address and phone, the countersigning officer's name and position, your position, salary and years of service, approved leave and confirmation that your job is kept for your return.
- Self-employed: a trade licence from the City Corporation, the RJSC incorporation certificate, the income tax return and TIN certificate, and six months of company statements.
- Student: proof of enrolment, a leave certificate when travelling in term, and a school letter for school trips.
- Money: six months of personal statements from a bank operating in Bangladesh, with other proof of solvency such as credit card statements.
- Trip: a return flight booking with its PNR or reservation number and the itinerary, plus hotel confirmation for the whole stay.
- Insurance: valid across the Schengen area for the whole stay, covering medical fees, hospitalisation and repatriation of at least €30,000.
- Civil status: marriage, divorce or death certificates, translated into English and apostilled.
- Non-Bangladeshi residents: a valid Bangladesh residence permit as well.
The embassy can ask for any further paper not on the list. For how these papers have to agree with each other, see our Schengen visa documents checklist.
What are Italy's apostille and translation rules?
Italy is stricter than most on civil-status papers. A marriage certificate, such as a Nikah Nama or a Hindu marriage registration, a divorce certificate such as a Talaq Nama, and a spouse's death certificate must be translated into English and apostilled. The checklist adds that only one apostille per submitted document will be accepted.
For a minor, the consent of both parents or the custodian, when both parents are not travelling, must be original and apostilled, and so must the child's original birth certificate. A legal guardian proves that status with papers from a Bangladeshi court, also original and apostilled. Allow time for this, because apostilles come from the issuing country's authorities, not from the visa centre.
Should you use an agency for an Italy visa?
You can apply alone: the checklist is public and the centres take individual bookings. An agency helps most with the Italian specifics, such as the wording of the employer letter, apostilles on the right papers and a family invitation in the embassy's format, where one small miss can stop a file.
If you use one, choose an agency that checks files with Visolv. It reads each paper, checks that names, dates, salary and leave agree across the file, and flags papers that look edited, so gaps get fixed before the appointment. See how the check works.
How much does an Italy Schengen visa cost?
The Italian embassy's fee page lists €90 for an adult Schengen visa and €45 for a child aged 6 to 12, paid in cash in taka. A national type D visa costs €116, or €50 for study. The centre adds its service fee, and neither fee is refunded after a refusal, so check the official page before paying.
Insurance, translations, apostilles and any agency fee come on top; our Schengen visa fee guide adds up the full cost of a file.
How often does Italy refuse visas from Bangladesh?
Often. The European Commission's 2025 statistics show Italy's consulate did not issue 60.3% of the Schengen applications lodged in Bangladesh, above the 54.5% average for all Schengen consulates here. That is a reason to prepare carefully, not to apply elsewhere: the main-destination rule decides the consulate, not the statistics.
What if Italy refuses your visa?
Read the ticked grounds first. Italy's foreign ministry says a refusal can be appealed to the Regional Administrative Court of Lazio within 60 days of notification, served on the State Legal Service, while family reunion refusals follow a different court route. For most visitor refusals a stronger new application is quicker, as our guide on what to do after a Schengen refusal explains.
An Italy Schengen visa from Bangladesh rewards precision: the right main destination, the embassy's own checklist, apostilles where Italy asks for them and genuine papers throughout. Prepare it that way, and if you want a second check before you book, go through a visa agency that uses Visolv.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I apply for an Italy visa in Bangladesh?
Only through VFS Global, which the Italian embassy names as the exclusive channel for visa applications. There are centres in Dhaka at Nafi Tower in Gulshan 1, in Chattogram at the World Trade Center in Agrabad, and in Sylhet at the Nirvana Inn Complex. Book on the VFS Italy Bangladesh site and bring the full checklist.
How long does an Italy Schengen visa take from Bangladesh?
Under EU rules, the consulate normally decides within 15 calendar days of a complete application, and it can extend that to 45 days if it needs more papers or a closer look. The wait for an appointment comes on top, so book early. You can lodge the application up to six months before you travel.
Do I need an apostille for an Italy visa?
For civil-status papers, yes. The Italian embassy's checklist asks for marriage, divorce and death certificates translated into English and apostilled, and for minors, the parents' consent and the birth certificate in original and apostilled. Only one apostille per document is accepted. Papers such as bank statements go in exactly as the bank issued them.
Can I visit other Schengen countries on an Italian visa?
Yes, within the visa's dates and days, but Italy must be your main destination when you apply: the country where you spend the most nights, or the first you enter if stays are equal. Planning most of the trip elsewhere and applying to Italy anyway can lead to refusal and to questions at the border.
Does the Italian embassy in Dhaka handle Malta and Slovakia visas?
Yes, for short stays. The Italian embassy says it represents Malta and Slovakia solely for processing type C Schengen visa applications. If Malta or Slovakia is your main destination, you lodge through the same Italian visa centres, but confirm the checklist and any differences with the embassy before you book.
Is the Italy visa fee paid in euros or taka?
In taka. The embassy sets the fee in euros, €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, and says payment is made in cash in local currency. The visa centre's service fee is separate. Check both amounts on the official pages before you go, and keep the receipt.
